Ultrasonic sensors detect solid or fluid targets on great distance - without any dependency on the characteristics of the surface. The sensors are equipped with teach-in functions and different interfaces. The distance to an object will be calculated by the measured lead time from emission and receiving of an acoustic pulse. Because of high dependency from temperature the result is temperature compensated. According to the sensor type the output signal is analogue 0 ... 10 V or 4 ... 20 mA respectively digital PNP or NPN.
These devices detect objects due to acoustic interrupt (one way system) or changed lead time (reflective System). Related to photoelectric sensors ultrasonic sensors are slowly but nearly independent from surface properties.
